Why It Matters
Sonic tomography works by placing sensors around the tree trunk or limb, then tapping each sensor to send stress waves across the wood. Where wood quality is high, the waves travel quickly. Where decay is present, they slow down. Where wood is missing (a cavity or crack), the waves have to travel around it, taking noticeably longer to reach the other sensors.
As a result, the technology can indicate the probable presence of internal decay, cavities, cracks and other structural features that visual inspection alone can't detect. In particular, it helps arborists, engineers and property owners understand what is really happening inside a tree before making retention, pruning or removal decisions.
This is especially valuable for high-value trees where retention is preferred, or for trees near buildings, roads or high-use areas where getting the decision right actually matters.
2D Sonic Tomography
2D sonic tomography provides a cross-sectional assessment of the internal condition of a tree stem or major scaffold limb at a selected testing height. Using specialised sonic technology, measurements are taken around the circumference of the tree to produce an image representing variations in wood condition. Areas of reduced sonic velocity may indicate altered wood properties consistent with decay, cavities, cracks, or other internal features.
2D testing is often suitable for suspected internal decay, hollow trees, crack investigations, and trees with visible defects. In addition, it supports Visual Tree Assessments (VTA), risk assessments, baseline condition monitoring, and homeowners seeking further investigation before making a removal decision.

3D Sonic Tomography
3D sonic tomography builds on the information obtained from a single cross-section by assessing multiple levels of the stem or structural limb. As a result, we can create a three-dimensional representation of the tested section, giving a clearer understanding of the vertical extent of internal wood alteration and structural defects.
This assessment is particularly valuable for high-value trees where retention is preferred, and for management decisions that require a greater level of confidence than a 2D scan can provide.
