Professional Tree Removal
Removing a tree isn't just about the cut. It's about the planning, the right method for the tree and its surrounds, the permit if one's needed, and the care taken with your property during the work.
Canopy has been removing trees across Canberra since 1986. Our arborists assess every tree before quoting, plan the safest approach, handle the ACT paperwork when it's required, and clean up thoroughly when the job's done.
Whether it's a small backyard tree or a 30-metre eucalypt near power lines or your house, we have the equipment, certifications and experience to handle it.

How We Do It
Not every tree can come down the same way. The right method depends on the tree's size, its surroundings, and what's below it. Here are the three approaches we use across Canberra properties.
Our climbers ascend the tree and remove it piece by piece, lowering sections with rigging ropes. Used for trees in tight urban settings, over structures, or where a straight fall would cause damage. Slower but safer for the surrounds. The default method for most residential jobs in Canberra.
The tree is cut at the base and felled in one piece into a clear drop zone. Suited to open properties, rural blocks, and larger sites with room to work. Faster and more economical when the space allows it, but rarely appropriate in dense residential areas.
A crane lifts large sections out of the tree as they're cut, moving them clear of the property before lowering them to the ground. Used for very large trees, difficult access sites, and jobs where climbing risk is too high. The safest option for oversized removals near houses or power lines.
ACT Tree Protection
The ACT has strict tree protection laws under the Tree Protection Act 2005. Many trees on private property need approval from the ACT Tree Protection Unit before removal, particularly larger or protected species. If you're not sure whether your tree is regulated, we can check it for you and handle the application from start to finish.
Local Experience
Some trees end up on our removal list more often than others. Not because they're bad trees, but because Canberra's climate, planting history and building density have created specific problems. Here are the ones we see most.
Fast-growing eucalypts planted through the 60s and 70s that have now reached mature size in tight suburban blocks. Structural failures during storms, limb drop, and root damage to slabs are the common triggers for removal.
Planted as windbreaks and screens across older Canberra properties. At maturity they become top-heavy and prone to catastrophic failure in strong westerlies. Rarely worth keeping past 40-50 years on a residential block.
Historic street plantings and older gardens are full of them. Elm leaf beetle damage, drought stress, and root heaving of driveways and paths are the main reasons owners call. Suckering roots make full removal the only fix.
Planted along waterways and boundaries for privacy or shade. Both aggressive suckerers with invasive roots that damage pipes, foundations and neighbouring gardens. Often removed under legal or council pressure.
After Canberra's summer storms, we get a run of calls to remove eucalypts that have lost major limbs or split at the union. Assessment is critical: some can be pruned back and retained, others need to come out fully.
Any species can end up here through disease, drought stress, or damage. Dead trees near houses or high-use areas are removal candidates due to the falling limb risk, regardless of species.

Frequently Asked
The questions Canberra property owners ask us most often before booking a tree removal.
Cost depends on the tree's size, the access to the site, its proximity to buildings or power lines, whether a crane is needed, and the volume of debris to be removed. A small backyard tree with easy access can be a few hundred dollars. A large gum near a house that needs crane-assisted removal can run into the thousands. We provide a written quote after a site visit so you know exactly what you're paying for before work begins.
Possibly. The ACT protects trees above certain size thresholds under the Tree Protection Act 2005. If your tree is classed as "regulated" or sits on the protected register, you need approval from the ACT Tree Protection Unit before any work can start. Removing a regulated tree without approval can result in significant fines. We can assess your tree during a site visit and tell you whether a permit is required.
A straightforward backyard removal usually takes half a day, including cleanup. A large tree requiring dismantling can take a full day. Crane-assisted removals of very large trees may run into a second day. If a permit is required, add the ACT approval timeline before we can start.
Stump grinding is a separate service, but we can quote both together. Grinding removes the stump to a specified depth below ground so you can replant, lay lawn over the top, or pave the area. Let us know what you plan to do with the space and we'll recommend the right approach.
By default we remove everything. Branches go through the chipper, larger sections are cut down and hauled away. If you'd like to keep the firewood, or want the tree mulched on site for garden use, let us know before we start and we'll adjust the scope.
Boundary trees can be complicated. Ownership usually follows where the trunk sits at ground level, but both neighbours may have obligations to maintain and pay for work. We recommend talking to your neighbour before booking, especially if a permit is needed. We can quote the work either way and split invoices between properties if that helps.
Almost always. We've removed trees from properties where the only access is through a house, over a fence, or via a narrow side path. Method depends on access: sectional dismantling with rigging can move debris out to the street piece by piece, and cranes can lift sections over rooflines. We work it out during the site visit.
Storm damage, a fallen tree blocking access, or a limb resting on your roof? Call our 24/7 emergency line on 0478 485 305. We prioritise emergency callouts and can usually be on site within hours across Canberra and surrounds.
